68 Hours and 10 Minutes

April 6th, 2007

Thank God Elliot was at the end of all that! That was how long our labor was. Of course, I had the kind of labor that no one told me about – prodermal labor, also known as latent labor. Contractions were happening but they weren’t going anywhere. However, they were strong enough to keep me awake. After laboring at home for the first 52 hours, we finally went to the birth center. I was dilated 3 centimeters and 90% effaced and they decided to break my water to try and get things going – which they did. I stalled out a couple times along the way but finally, after pushing for 2 hours, Elliot made his debut! While we did not have a waterbirth as I was hoping for (the warm water nearly stopped my contractions and I had to get out), we did have a completely natural birth and Elliot was healthy and alert. I can honestly say I never wanted drugs, I just wanted it to be over. Taking one contraction at a time and being able to feel everything in my body doing its job helped me stay focused and relaxed. Also, after 9 and a half months of waiting to find out if our baby was a boy or a girl, it did turn out to be one of my greatest motivators to keep going. I will never forget Bryan telling me we had a boy! It was the best surprise of my entire life!
