Excuse me, did you say I can GAIN more weight?
Why, yes! I celebrated the beginning of Week 17 with my latest monthly checkup. Today I met with one of the nurse practitioners, Sylvia. She was pretty nice and yes, said I could gain a little more weight. Here are the stats: my weight has gone up 2 pounds in the past 4 weeks (Sylvia said I should be gaining about a pound a week), my blood pressure was great (113/74), heart rate was great (86), baby’s heart rate was 154 and very loud today! Baby was moving all over the place and I could actually hear it on the doppler when it moved. It sounds like a swish. As for the weight thing, I already guessed that I haven’t been taking in the necessary amount of calories per day. I’m eating healthy overall but I definitely don’t say no when Bryan offers to go to DQ for me. I control my portions, eat when I’m hungry, try to eat before I’m starving and never fail to eat breakfast. Now I have to reprogram myself to start doing what I’ve learned not to do – start snacking between meals, including a snack before bed. AHHHHH!!! Yes, I know, if I really wanted to pack in the calories, it would be easy. Not so easy with healthy food, which is naturally low in calories! I’ll be eating all the time! Anyway, sorry for the rant. My books give good suggestions for easy ways to add nutritious calories. You just can’t flip a switch from the discipline it takes to maintain a healthy weight/lose a few pounds to having a mindframe that gaining weight is not only okay, it is necessary. Baby is starting to store fat and gain weight at a faster rate which is why I can afford to add on a few pounds. However, I’m not going to aim for a pound a week because that is going to be 23 pounds, not counting the extra that I’ll naturally be putting on the closer I get to D-Day.  This week, baby is supposed to be about 4 and a half inches long and weighs about 3 and a half ounces. I think I’ve felt it move but it hasn’t been consistent enough yet to know when it’s the baby or other various activity going on. I’m getting bigger, showing through more clothes and I’m definitely quitting my jeans at the end of this week. This weekend’s project is going to be going through the maternity clothes that the mother of one of my clients donated and figuring out what I need to go buy in order to be comfortable for a while. I’m feeling wonderful and I am definitely loving the second trimester. Aside from the occasional growing pain and frequent morning congestion, I have no complaints. It’s just hard being patient. I can’t wait for this little one to grow!
